As some of you know and those who will find out one day, knowing what your baby wants and when can be very frustrating to new or experienced parents. I remember going through, are they hungry, wet, tired, hurting, bored, just want to be held, sick. These are just a few of the possibilities. When your baby is crying and you can't find out what they want can lead to frustration for you and your baby.
My grandson was a late talker, he did not start talking until he was 2 1/2, so figuring out what he wanted turned into a game show, everyone was guessing and trying to make him happy. When we were expecting our second grandchild, I bought a book about signing with your baby for my son and daughter-in-law. They were skeptical at first and in a nice way laughed at me, but agreed to give it a genuine try to avoid what they went through with their first child.
Our second grandchild, precious little Allison is now 18 months, and is signing like crazy. She started signing when she was about 8 months old, this is far earlier than a child would start talking. It started out with just a few signs, and I can tell you this is much easier than listening to a baby cry until "you" figure out what they want.
Babies who can sign have shown less frustration and are much happier. Learning sign language at an early age helps the brain development in the critical early years. Children who sign are showing advanced language skills than those who do not sign.
Signing also provides a unique bonding experience between you and your child. Our 4 year old grandson is learning signing along with his baby sister, they communicate back and forth, is not for sign language it would be a guessing game for him also.
Signing can come in handy, especially for those who use ASL as their primary language. It is also fun for everyone in the family. I've found a excellent e-book that gives very detailed information about signing with your baby. It is actually better than the one I originally got for my son. They are expecting their third and final child, I have purchased this e-book for my daughter, she is expecting her first child in about a month. This book gives more information and also comes with bonus items. If your looking to make your life easier for you and your baby, of even if your baby is a toddler or older, then you need to buy this book. You will not regret it, the regret will come when you don't have it and your baby is constantly screaming for no reason. Those of you that are parents know exactly what I'm talking about!!!
